Looking for Club Music? Try Spotify!

As you prepare for club this fall, make sure to check out Spotify. Spotify is a free music library, with access to tons of different music. All you need to do is create an account and download the music player. There's also an app where you can play Spotify off your phone at club. So easy!

Lisa Brown has created a YoungLives Playlist to help get you started. Enjoy!

Have you used Spotify already? Have songs to add to the playlist? Post your suggestions in the comments below.

Why is music important in club?

Movies have soundtracks for a reason. They help create an atmosphere for what you're seeing. In the same way, using music in a club setting creates an atmosphere that's unifying, fun and reflective. It has been said that the message speaks to the head, but music speaks to the heart. Music will break down walls -- QUICK!

A few tips for Club Music:
          • Check iTunes Top 10 List to see what's popular and what kids are listening to!
          • Visit the Music Page on the Staff Resources site for tips such as creating a song list (why order is important!) and MORE!
          • Join the YL Music E-Newsletter for regular updates and song leading tips

How Can You Use Music in YoungLives? Watch this Club!

You know girls love to sing! Here's an example of a YoungLives Club in Wichita, KS doing music Young Life style!

New iPod song for Club

Dynamite is a song by Taio Cruz that we've started using in club and the girls LOVE it. We use an iPod to sing along with the song.

A lot of songs are also available with lyrics on YouTube. See a previous post for more info on how to do that HERE.

And...ACTION!!!

If we are honest, we can probably quote more movie lines than we can scripture (or maybe that is just me!) The images, plots, and characters stay with us. So, how do we use this to share Jesus with teen moms???

Brilliant (and FREE!) Website to Find Movie Clips for Club

WingClips.com
is a great website for movie clips that you can use as illustrations for your club talk. We have also used these short movie clips as transitions (when we're cleaning up from games, etc.). You can search for a movie by the title or by a topic. You have to create an account but you can download clips for free. Check it out here: http://wingclips.com

Using YouTube to Lead Songs in Club

I know club music can be such a challenge to many of us (we don't play the guitar, don't know anyone who does, we can't sing, none of our volunteers can, etc, etc, etc...) - using YouTube can change this, ladies! Go to youtube and search for the lyrics you are looking for. (Ex: search - Umbrella by Rihanna Lyrics) It will pull up a few options for this song - all of the lyrics are typed out for you and will move along as the song plays (with Rihanna singing). Then, you just have to download these to your computer. You can play them right off your computer at club - onto a screen and with speakers hooked up. Now, you have Rihanna singing her song (and turn it up loud!) and the lyrics typed out and moving along with the song. Make sure you still have someone "leading the song" from the front of club! They need to in front of the girls, facing them, modeling how to sing along (getting into it!). Also, make sure your mentors know how to sing...teach them! They need to sing load, get into it, move around, dance, clap, put their arms around girls, pull in girls in the back, whatever it takes to bring in energy and make girls feel part of the group.) We cannot let YouTube do all the work for us, but it sure can do a lot!!! This was very successful in our club in San Antonio and in many clubs that I have visited. Try it!!!!

For the Non-Singers... SIGN!

For girls that don't sing... sign! I love teaching my girls songs with sign language. It helps them to stop thinking about the fact that they are singing and start focusing on the motions of their hands! Look online for easy songs to sign. One that I love? "Bring Me Closer" watch the video above.
